A Very Present Help!

Psalm 46 (NKJV)

1 God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.

2 Therefore we will not fear,

Even though the earth be removed,

And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

3 Though its waters roar and be troubled,

Though the mountains shake with its swelling.

4 There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God,

The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High.

5 God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved;

God shall help her, just at the break of dawn.

6 The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved;

He uttered His voice, the earth melted.

7 The Lord of hosts is with us;

The God of Jacob is our refuge.

8 Come, behold the works of the Lord,

Who has made desolations in the earth.

9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;

He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two;

He burns the chariot in the fire.

10 Be still, and know that I am God;

I will be exalted among the nations,

I will be exalted in the earth!

11 The Lord of hosts is with us;

The God of Jacob is our refuge.

I normally pick a verse or two for our devotionals, but as the Lord placed the idea of being a present help upon my heart, as I read down through, I found this to be a very timely and much-needed Psalm. We may feel lost, we may even feel lonely as we start this social distancing thing, but the Lord is always by our side, he is always our hope and help.

A Very Present Help

We do not serve a distant God, our God is by our side and ready to be a very present help. He may not shield us from the storm, but He is certainly there to help us through it. He provides us strength. Philippians 4:13 proclaims… (13) I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me… He provides wisdom. James 1:5 promises… (5) If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. He is our courage. Psalm 56:3–4 reminding us... (3) Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. (4) In God (I will praise His word), In God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?

The Lord Of Hosts Is With Us

Even though the earth may rage, mountains my tumble, through it all, our God will be there with us. During a time of emergency, we must place our hope and faith in Him. He promises to always be there. He makes the wars cease, He breaks the bow, He burns the chariot with fire. He is our God!

Be Still And Know

We can get all worked up about a number of things. We can worry about the financial system, we can be petrified to even talk with other people, we can worry about our future, or we can be still. If we know Him to be our God, we must be still. That is not to say that we should just wait around and not protect ourselves. But, we should have peace, and hope, even during times of trouble.

Closing Thoughts:

The God of Jacob is our refuge, that is enough for me.

1 Corinthians 16:13 (NKJV)

13 Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.
