John 13:34 (NKJV)
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
We as a nation have lost our way… or His way I should say. Police brutality and racial injustices are among a number of hot button topics that have plagued our once great nation. I went back and forth with whether or not to address any of these issues, but as Christians, I believe we must take a stand. America’s problem is not only about police, it is not only about race, it has everything to do with the heart. We have strayed away from the greatest commandment and we are now paying a very steep price for that disobedience.
Love Is The Answer
1 John 3:11–12 offers us the following… (11) For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, (12) not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous… Instinctively we know we should love one another and have from the beginning. How many injustices could have been avoided if we simply loved one another? Look at the example of Cain and Able, if Cain followed the commandment to love, he would not have committed murder. We cannot love someone and murder them at the same time. We cannot love someone and steal from them at the same time. We cannot love someone and be envious at the same time. Where sin abounds, love cannot and will not follow.
Do They Know You Are A Christian?
John 13:35 offers this timely reminder… (35) By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another… If we profess with our mouths that we are Christian, the world should know that we are His disciples through the love we have for one another. John explaining that the number one way the world can prove to the world we are Christian is through love. The old saying goes “nobody cares what you know until they know how much you care.” The world needs to see and experience the love we have been given through Christ. When the world knows we care, it will care to understand what we know. What we know should be the love of Christ. If we have been changed, if we have felt the love He gives us, we should encourage and promote that same love.
Do Everything With Love
1 Corinthians 16:14 (14) Let all that you do be done with love… Oh, how much different would this world look if we truly lived by this verse? Name the profession, cop, teacher, cashier, dentist, the list goes on and on… what if everyone in those positions did everything with love? What if you visited your neighbor with love? What if you drove through town with love? What if you watched sports with love? What if you did everything with love? Let all that you do be done with love… then and only then will we see the world change in a meaningful way.
It’s Time To Promote Change
Colossians 3:14 (14) But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection… The bond of perfection, love. Does the world need more legislation? Does the world need more foundations? Do we need more training? Maybe. One thing that is certain, one foundational truth, the world needs love.
We are in a very tough place and I am not professing to know the answer completely. But, I encourage you and everyone you share this with to love. Look at the people around you, each and every one of them are children of God. They may not know it yet, but we are all God’s children. Matthew 25:36 reminds us how God views His children and the way we treat them… (36) I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me… To paraphrase… when I needed love, you loved me.
1 Corinthians 13:4–8 (NKJV)
4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 Love never fails.
