1 Peter 1:13–16 (NKJV)
13 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; 15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”
We are given the command to be holy because He is holy several times throughout scripture. We see this command in Leviticus 11:44, 11:45, 20:26, 19:2, 20:7, 21:8 1 Peter 1:15, and in Deuteronomy 23:14. It is a very simple command, but one that is very difficult to obtain and adhere to. Regardless, this should be the direction we want our lives to be going in. We need to be holy, as He is holy. We have a very clear example of what that looks like in our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Holiness Starts With Cleansing
2 Corinthians 7:1 guides us with the following reminder… (1) Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God… We live in a very dirty, sinful, dark world, it is no wonder we have to start this process by cleansing ourselves from this world.
Interact With The World Appropriately
Hebrews 12:14 instructs… (14) Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord… If we are going to live holy lives, we must interact peacefully with all God’s people. We cannot be holy without peace. Negatively interacting with those around us diminishes our walk and impacts others more than we know.
Maintain The Course
I like how the CSB translates Psalm 119:9(CSB)… (9) How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping your word… I hate to sound like a broken record, but how do we keep our path straight and our way pure? By keeping His word! The only way to keep His word is to continually study it. If we desire to maintain our course with Him, we have to be willing to study His word.
Seek His Guidance
Finally, if we want to be holy as He is holy, we must seek His guidance and listen carefully to what He is instructing. Psalm 139:23–24 has the perfect guiding words… (23) Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; (24) And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting… That must be our prayer! Be willing to allow the Lord to search your heart, and more importantly understand what He is finding in there. We can quickly get off track in this life, His guidance will bring us back to holiness!
We are given a very clear directive, be holy as He is holy. That is the goal, that is our drive, that is where our dedication should be. If we set that as the goal, everything else in our walk will fall into place.
Romans 6:22 (NKJV)
22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.
