Genesis 6:9 (NKJV)
9 This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.
We can read all we want, commit as many verses to memory as possible, we can even die a martyrs death, it matters none if we do not truly walk with God. Noah is a wonderful example of obedience to God. Look at the life Noah lived, he was a just man, perfect in his generations. Is that not exactly what we should be striving for?
Ignore The Noise
Proverbs 29:25 offers the following (25) The fear of man brings a snare, But whoever trusts in the LORD shall be safe… What would have happened if Noah had feared man over God? In Genesis 6:14–16 God instructs Noah to build an ark… (14) Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch. (15) And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. (16) You shall make a window for the ark, and you shall finish it to a cubit from above; and set the door of the ark in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, and third decks… Can you imagine what Noah’s neighbors must have thought? Did Noah care what they thought? Absolutely not! He was given a command and no matter how crazy it sounded, Noah was going to achieve the task his God had given him. Not only was he going to achieve it, but he was also going to do it to the best of our ability? I suppose that stands to reason since iit was going to ultimately keep him alive.
God has just as many commandments for us today as He did then. We may not be asked to build an ark fifty cubits long, but we are being asked to spread His gospel, to love His people, and obey His commandments. It is a lot easier to spread His gospel and love His people than it is to find gopherwood, let alone build a flotation device with it.
A Warning For Today
If we look around today, is there much difference between the overall behavior of the world today and the way they behaved during Noah’s day? Genesis 6:5 explains the condition that caused God’s anger… (5) Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually… I do not think it takes a significant step to connect the dots here. The world today is wicked, the thoughts of man and the condition of their hearts are evil and growing worse by the day. With the world tumbling out of control, it is all the more important to live a just life.
What Our Lives Must Look Like
Colossians 3:12–17 gives us the perfect example of what our lives should look like during this very trying time… (12) Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; (13) bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. (14) But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. (15) And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. (16) Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. (17) And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him… Amen?
If we are going to be anything like Noah, we must ignore the outside world. The outside world will question and mock, God will lead and encourage! Listen to God, ignore the mockers!
Genesis 6:8 (NKJV)
8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.
