Believe It Or Not

John 3:36 (NKJV)

36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

66 books written by 40 different authors and the message really boils down to whether you believe it or not. I have spoken to many people that always come up with a number of reasons for not reading or understanding the Bible. I get it completely, there are a lot of very difficult things to understand in the scriptures. What is the Trinity? What does it mean for a camel to go through the eye of a needle? How did a couple of fish and some bread feed thousands? Of course, there are many more complex concepts and questions. I do however love how simple John makes the question of salvation… If you believe in the Son, you are saved, if you do not believe in the Son, you are not.

Everlasting Life

We are given an absolutely awesome promise in 1 Peter 5:10… (10) But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you… The God of all grace has called us to eternal glory through our belief in Christ Jesus! Have you ever stopped to really think about that? The greatest gift to ever be given is ours for simply believing.

It really makes you wonder if people really understand the promise at all. I have seen and heard all the excuses… “I will get right and then get with the Lord,” “If I do enough good things, the Lord will accept me then,” “I have nothing to really offer to God.” These may all be true statements if the price of salvation were good works or good behavior. Thankfully, the price is belief and belief alone.

He Who Does Not Believe Shall Not See Life

This part of the verse should send shivers down your spine. If you do not believe, you shall not see eternal life. I assume if you are taking the time to read this devotional, you are probably a believer, but what about your friends and family? Put a name in this verse to feel the impact more… (friend) who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and (friend) who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him… If that verse is not enough to push you into action, think about Revelation 14:11… (11) And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name… The point is, we need to be doing everything we can to bring our non-believing friends to the place of belief and obedience.

One Direction Of The Other

Matthew 25:46 reminds us that we are heading in one direction or the other… (46) And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life… Let’s spread the Gospel that everyone we know would be going in the right direction.

Closing Thoughts:

As complex as the Bible is, it really does come down to whether you believe the promise or not. There is genuine benefit from studying the whole Bible, but at the core, we either believe or we do not. The Lord is calling all of us to help people go from unbelief to belief and there is nothing better in this world than experiencing that transformation.

John 3:16–17 (NKJV)

16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
