Ephesians 2:8 (NKJV)
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
If we read this verse alone we get a sense of just how much the Lord loves us, but when we put it in context with the verses leading up to this statement, the love the Lord has for us exceeds our wildest imagination. Paul makes it very clear the sinful state in which we lived before Christ. We were dead in trespass and sin. He gives us the opportunity to bring ourselves out of that trespass and sin, not only that, He has paid the redemptive cost for our sin state. How amazing is our God!
Paul tells us exactly where we were before the Lord, he uses the phrase, dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to this world. Talk about hitting the nail on the head! That is exactly where I was at before the Lord pulled me out of the mess I had made of my life, walking through this life, partaking in whichever trespass and sin felt good that day. Paul says we were living in the world according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, exactly! We can say otherwise, but before Christ, we knew we were being disobedient to the moral code of the Lord, we knew right from wrong and wrong from right, we were just acting in direct disobedience to the truth we already held in our heart.
Paul goes on to say that we conducted ourselves in the lusts of the flesh. Once again, Paul is absolutely correct in his assumption. Whatever makes the flesh feel good… do it. Oh, looking back what a miserable condition to conduct our lives.
I love those two words when they go together for my benefit. This is the condition I was in, this is the punishment I deserved for a disobedient life… but God. God who is rich in mercy, full of love for us, shows us grace! Each of us has a sin nature, it is very evident each and every day! But God...
Saved through faith… that is it, no faith plus, no Jesus plus, we are saved through faith and faith alone. There is nothing we can do in the condition we are in to achieve favor with God, it is only Jesus who can pay the price the sin of flesh has caused. I have met many great people, some of which do wonderful things in this world, but the price of admittance to Heaven is perfection, on our best day, we do not achieve that. So, it is by grace and grace alone that we are saved through faith in His promise. The best gift I have ever received!
But God… I know my sinful past… but God. I know where I should be… but God. I know who I am… but God. Live today in appreciation of God’s great grace!

And He shall direct your paths.
