Control Z

1 John 1:9 (NKJV)

9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

I am old enough that I experienced writing reports in middle school with a typewriter. This was just before the home computer would revolutionize the way we do... well, almost everything. This typewriter was one of the nicer models, it was electronic so that you did not have to slam each key to make it work. While it was on the nicer side of things, it was still a typewriter and the misspelling would inevitably happen towards the lower third of the paper, forcing you to start all over. I hated writing papers because of this. Then life changed with a simple shortcut command… control z. It makes me wonder what life would look like if it came with a control z option.

We Make Mistakes

James 3:2 offers us this reminder… (2) For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body… We all experience those “where is the control z button” type of moments, those moments where we know we have stumbled. If you are anything like me, it is probably a daily event. Just because we are saved, does not mean we are perfect.

The Power Of Confession

One of the hardest things to do is confessing that we have missed the mark. We all understand the expectations the Lord has placed on us, it is hard to admit when we come up short. James 5:16 recommends… (16) Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much… This of course should only be done with brothers and sisters we can trust. When we are held accountable for our actions, the negative actions usually cease. There is true power in confession. Confession done properly leads to repentance, repentance can lead to revival, and revival can lead to a strengthened walk with the Lord.

What Is Better Than Control Z?

Read 1 John 1:9 very slowly… If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness… How much better is this than the undo command? If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive. Notice we have to take an action. We first have to understand that we have fallen short of God’s expectations, we have done something contrary to what God expects of us. Then, we must confess that failure to our heavenly Father. That is very difficult sometimes, is it not? If we admit our failures and seek forgiveness, the Lord will be faithful in forgiving us! We may not have a control z button, but God does. God uses that control z button to cleanse us from all unrighteousness… how remarkable is that!

Closing Thoughts:

We have all fallen short of God’s expectations, everyone. Thankfully, we serve a God that is both faithful and just to forgive us. We no longer have to be pulled down with previous sin, we simply have to see our failure and ask God to be faithful in pushing the control z command. Where would we be without that kind of love and grace?

Isaiah 41:10 (NKJV)

10 Fear not, for I am with you;

Be not dismayed, for I am your God.

I will strengthen you,

Yes, I will help you,

I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’
