Do The Things Paul Did

Philippians 4:9 (NKJV)

9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.

Today as we give thanks for all the things the Lord has done for us, we ought not forget about the great examples the Lord raised up for us, Paul being very much among them. We see the confidence Paul has in his own walk as he instructs the church to look at the things they have learned, received, saw, and heard from him, and follow them. You had better be absolutely sure you are right with God before telling people to follow after you… I think it is safe to say, Paul was certainly worthy of this.

The Things Which You Learned

2 Timothy 3:16–17 reminds us… (16) All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work… If we believe the Bible was inspired by God, it would make sense that we believe it is profitable for doctrine and correction. The problem is, in many cases, we do not study the scripture enough to understand the commandments found inside. We must commit ourselves to learning God’s instruction through His word.

Are You Receiving God’s Word?

There is a nation full of people that attend church, sometimes even on a regular basis that are not actually receiving God’s word at all. James 1:22 offers us the following… (22) But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves… Are we simply listening to the word, or are we doing it? It is very easy to sit through a sermon each Sunday, it is quite another to listen, study, and then apply it to our lives. We cannot be a nation of listeners, we have to be a willing participant in the will of God.

You Heard And Saw In Me

We are given a very clear direction to live as Paul lived, who was living as Jesus lived. The question is, are we “Paul” to anyone in our lives? If we take instruction from Paul and Paul took instruction from Jesus, our lives should look a lot like Jesus’ life. What are people going to learn when they hear us? What are people going to receive when they see us? These are very powerful questions. If we are doing the things Paul did, they should be seeing and experiencing the life-changing impact of Christ!

The God Of Peace With You

I love the simplicity of this verse, it reminds us of how simple the message really is. It promises that if we follow Paul, who followed Jesus, we will have peace with God. Is that not what we are all looking for? Follow these commandments and have peace, it is a wonderful promise. Unfortunately, many of us do not follow His commandments and ultimately do not find peace with God. Let us never fall into that category!

Closing Thoughts:

We are given a very clear directive, see Paul, hear Paul, learn from Paul, and do as Paul did… if we do that, our reward is peace with our Creator, our God.

Matthew 16:24 (NKJV)

24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
