John 15:4–5 (NKJV)
4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
Everything we do, everything we think, everything we say, and everything we hope should be a reflection of our Savior. We should look like Him, sound like Him, hope like Him, and ultimately think like Him. If we are a branch and Jesus is the vine, and we do not look alike, we are probably from a different vine. If Jesus is a green vine and we are a purple branch, we do not belong to one another. But, how do we become a branch of Jesus?
The closer and closer we are with our Creator, the more and more we should look like Him. If we still look like the world, the world probably remains the vine we are attached to. There are a number of ways we can look like the world, does our car have inappropriate stickers? do we wear ungodly clothing? the list goes on and on. The best way to look like our vine has nothing to do with physical appearance… we should show we are like Jesus through love. If people see the love of Christ through us, they can see that we are attached to a different vine than the world.
As we become more Christ-like, our words should reflect His. I remember a time when it seemed every other word out of my mouth was a swear word. Then as I was saved, that all changed, all of a sudden I was very much aware of the words coming out of my mouth and they were not pleasing to the Lord. The words that come out of our mouth have a great impact on our perceived character. Do the words we use show the love of the Lord or the lust of the world? If we are a branch of Jesus’ vine, the words we use should reflect the infallible character of our God.
We should hope as Jesus hopes. What is Jesus’ greatest hope? that all come to salvation through faith. Is that where we are at? Do we hope and actively pray that those around us come to the same understanding of Jesus that we have? If that is truly our hope and prayer, we should be doing everything we can to advance God’s kingdom.
We should also be thinking like our God. There is no other way to think like Jesus than to study His Word. We should be in continual study to learn more about our Savior and the commands He makes. As we grow in our understanding, our thoughts should be backed with scripture.
If we abide in Him, we should start to look like Him, speak like Him, hope like Him and think like Him. As we abide in the vine, we start to become one with the vine, the nutrients from the vine start to flow through us, as a result, there will be an abundance of fruit. When people see how we have changed now that we are attached to the right vine, they too will seek out our glorious God.
Don’t be a purple branch.
Ephesians 4:22–24 (NKJV)
22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
