1 Corinthians 15:58 (CSB)
58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the Lord’s work, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
In our daily lives, excelling in our work is commendable. There are awards for every conceivable thing. I remember one of my first jobs was working at the local hardware store. Each week the manager would give away wooden nickles. These nickles were used to buy different prizes. It was a very small reward but meant so much. Then you have employee of the month, financial bonuses and so on. When you excel in the workplace, oftentimes you are rewarded. That reward, whether small or significant is usually worth working hard for. The same should be said for the work we do for the Lord.
Galatians 6:9 reminds us… (NKJV) (9) And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart… We must approach everything we are doing for the Lord in steadfastness, not growing weary as we are doing good. It takes commitment and steadfastness to achieve the things the Lord is calling us to. This is certainly the case with witnessing. When we witness to people we cannot grow weary. It can take months or even years to finally reach some people. The Lord is calling us all to witness, we must be completely committed to the task at hand.
The Justin Rizzo song “Tree” offers the best example of being immovable…
I want to be unmovable and unshakable
So let my roots go down deep
Unmovable and unshakable in You
If we are to do the work of the Lord and do it well, we must be unmovable and unshakeable, with roots that go down deep. The importance of a strong relationship with the Lord cannot be understated if we want to impact the world for Christ. Those roots cannot go down deep until we have completely surrendered to His will.
When our time has come to return home, we want to find favor with God. We will also want to know we had an impactful life. We all want to hear the words spoken in Matthew 25:23… (23) His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant… Everything we do should be done to the fullness of our abilities.
We have an important job, we are to spread the Gospel for the Lord. Whenever we are given the opportunity to work, we must make sure to give it the effort it demands because we know our labor will never be in vain.
James 2:17 (NKJV)
17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
