1 Peter 5:8 (NKJV) 8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
I went to the grocery store the other day and at the advice of my better half, I wore a mask. This, of course, makes sense, we want to protect ourselves from the dangers of COVID-19 and coronavirus. Throughout the country and the entire world, precautions are being taken to stop the advance of this pandemic. There are 328,200,000 people in the United States, to date there have been 664,201 confirmed cases of coronavirus. I am not getting into the validity of the numbers or anything like that, I simply want to look at the numbers as they sit. As they sit, 0.0017% of the population in the United States has contracted this virus. In contrast, there is something far more deadly which impacts 100% of the population regardless of country. Sin. Please do not take this as me minimizing this global situation, I just want to point out the far-reaching impact sin has upon our lives. If we are protecting ourselves with face masks and social distancing because of something we have less than a 1% chance of contracting, we ought to protect ourselves from something as all-encompassing as sin? So… how do we mask our soul from sin? Be Sober Be sober, literally to abstain from wine. Why is the Lord recommending that we abstain from wine? The enemy can confuse, outwit, and, trick us easy enough with a clear mind, when our mind is not clear, we open ourselves up to his practices all the more. Obviously we ought to abstain from other mind-altering substances as well but we have to protect ourselves from anything that takes our focus off Jesus. Of course, there are a number of things the enemy can use to distract our focus. Money, pride, success, anger, fear, the list goes on and on. How do we keep our focus where it should be? Continue in sobriety. Be Vigilant Be vigilant, to stay awake or to keep watch. We must keep watch of everything going on around us. Once again the enemy uses anything he can to distract us from our goal. That goal should be to be completely sold out for Christ. We must be continually on guard. We have to be guarding ourselves against everything around us. The enemy can attack at any moment and from any angle. We have to stand ready to avoid the attack. Once again this takes 100% of our focus to be placed entirely upon Jesus. If we are in God’s Word continually, we will be able to keep watch and understand the way the enemy works all the more. Why Do We Have To Protect Our Soul? Our adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Interesting language here, it does not say the enemy is trying to trip us up, he is not trying to simply distract us, he is trying to devour us. That is his goal… complete eradication… them are, as they would say, fighting words. We must remain sober, we must remain vigilant because the goal of the enemy is nothing less than our destruction. We must take this threat seriously. We must defend ourselves with God’s armor. Closing Thoughts: We are in strange times right now, we do not understand the impact this virus will ultimately have upon our society. We do however understand the impact sin and the enemy can have on our salvation. I encourage you believer, put on the whole armor of God! Ephesians 6:10–18 (NKJV) 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—
