Zephaniah 3:17 (NKJV) 17 The Lord your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”
I think that we place the blame far too often upon the Lord when our relationship with Him seems distant. When things are not going your way, when He feels 10,000 miles away, we place all the blame upon Him. Is that fair of us? Is it truly God pulling away from us? Scripture promises us that God is in our midst. He promises in Hebrews 13:5 that we will never leave us nor forsake us. So let’s take a look at the distance we feel sometimes with the Lord and place the blame where it should be. The Old Couple The story goes… An old man and his bride were driving along in their single cab truck one day. The old woman looked at her husband and said: “do you remember when we first bought this truck and how in love we were?” She went on to talk about how she would sit right beside him on their long drives through the country and so on. As she finished reminiscing she looked at her husband and said: “Why aren’t we that close anymore?” The husband, driving his old pickup truck as he had for all those years, looked at his wife on the other side of the cab, and said: “I haven’t moved.” The Divide We can be like that bride, we can look at God and think, why are we so distant? Why don’t we pray like we used to? Why don’t I hear from you and more? James 1:17 promises… (17) Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning… The Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning… literally the Father of lights does not change! So if we feel like God is sitting on the other side of the cab, it probably is not Him causing the distance. So Many Reasons To Draw Near Look at the rest of the verse, the Mighty One will save! He will rejoice over you with gladness. He will quiet you with His love. He will rejoice over you with singing. We serve a loving God, a mighty God, a God that rejoices with us. If we start to feel a divide, we should be doing anything we can to rectify it quickly. Draw near to Him in all we do! Closing Thoughts: If we are feeling distant from God, sadly, it is probably our fault. There can be a number of reasons for this, but no matter what the spiritual problem is, the answer is always the same, draw near to Him and He will draw near to you! James 4:8 (NKJV) 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
