1 Corinthians 13:4–8 (NKJV)
4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.
What a wonderful blueprint for love! As we look at this section of Scripture it is amazing that the Lord loves us like this. Through all of our struggles, and all of our failures the Lord still loves us this way. These verses are often used during wedding ceremonies and rightfully so. This should be how we love our spouse, but, it should also be the love we show the rest of God’s children!
Love Your Spouse
Today, of course, is Valentine’s Day, a day we should show our gratitude for the person we love. As you go about your day be continually reminded what godly love looks like. At the end of the day, our actions are far more important than expensive flowers that will quickly wither away. So what should our love look like?
Characteristics that should be present in godly love - Long-suffering, kindness, truth, belief, hope, and endurance.
Characteristics that should not be present in godly love - Envy, pride, rudeness, self-centeredness, provoking, evil, and iniquity.
I love my wife more than I will ever be able to tell her. She is truly a blessing from our Lord. Unfortunately, I have to admit, I fall short on these commands. I am however trying each and every day to make sure that these characteristics remain where they should. Today think of the love you have for your spouse and make sure the characteristics that should be in your relationship are present and those that shouldn't be are not.
Love never fails!
While these are attributes that should be in our marriages, they also should be extending towards all God’s children. We should be long-suffering towards our friends, we shouldn’t be envious of our enemies, we should rejoice in the truth with everyone. The world needs this kind of love, let’s be the light the Lord is calling us to be!
1 Corinthians 16:14 (NKJV)
14 Let all that you do be done with love.
