Psalm 119:176 (NKJV)
176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep;
Seek Your servant,
For I do not forget Your commandments.
A few months ago a friend and I were driving back home in the dark as we returned from an addiction recovery meeting in which he was able to deliver his testimony. We were so excited about the reaction of those in attendance that were not really paying too much attention to the directions home. I had traveled that road several times and thought I knew exactly where I was going until we saw a sign welcoming us to a town that we were not supposed to go through to get back home. Thankfully we only ended up 30 or so minutes away from where we were supposed to go. The point is this… sometimes life distracts us to the point that we do not even realize we are lost, then it is always startling when we realize just how lost we have been.
Walking In His Path
It would be wonderful if we stayed on the Lord’s path from the time He found us until the time we go back home. Unfortunately, this just is not the case for all of us. I love hearing testimonies. I think it is pretty amazing to hear about people completely addicted to drugs before Christ and how He delivered them from such circumstances. But, the most powerful testimony belongs to those who accept Christ and walk out that faith for the rest of their lives. Let’s face it though, sometimes life has a way of stumbling us up. We can be walking an admirable walk absolutely focused on the Lord, then all of a sudden the world catches our attention. It does not have to be a huge thing, nor does it have to be small. Whatever it is forces our attention on it, and away from Christ. It may just take us slightly away from our intended path, but the longer we follow it, the further and further we become from Christ. All of a sudden we look up and realize we have gone astray. Take heart, it can even happen to those with the best of intentions.
What Should We Do When We Are Lost?
James 4:8 reminds us to draw near to God and He will draw near to us. We have never drifted so far away that the Lord cannot draw near to us again! If we have drifted away we should be seeking Him all the more. We must always remember that He is our good Shepard. Matthew 18:12 says that if a Shepard owns 100 sheep and one strays away, that he will go find that sheep, our Shepard will be faithful to seek after us no matter how far we have gone.
Never Forget His Commandments
How do we avoid going astray? Abiding in His commandments. That is why deep biblical study is vital to our walk with the Lord. If we know our Shepard’s voice we will not go far from it. It is when we do not know the voice of our leader that makes it very easy to become lost. Be in the Word every single day so that you may become close to our Lord and know His voice.
Have you ever found yourself stumbling on the wrong path in life? It happens to many of us. The important thing is to quickly realize our error and correct it. Do you feel a distance from the Lord today? Do you know that you are not quite on the Lord’s path? Seek Him with all your heart and return to the Shepard’s arms of safety!
Psalm 23 (NKJV)
A Psalm of David.
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
3 He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
