He Is

Psalm 91:2 (NKJV)

2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;

My God, in Him I will trust.”

There is so much to love about Psalm 91, but as we looked through this with a great friend that taught at church this past Sunday, this particular verse stood out to me. Look at all the amazing things the Lord is to us! He is our refuge, He is our fortress, and in Him, we can trust! Those are words we can live by, a promise as solid as any assurance we are given in life. But, do we live in that assurance?

You Are Not Alone

When we look out at the world, it is a crazy place. We have all kinds of devices to keep us connected, yet we can feel utterly alone. The more we are connected through technology, the more we feel disconnected personally. He promises to be our refuge, literally a shelter. As we look at crime rates skyrocket, as we see morality plummet, isn’t it good to know where our shelter is? Isn’t it great that we know right where to turn as the world has given us just a bit too much of itself? He, our Lord, promises to be there for us, to protect us from the storm that is everyday life here on earth. Then we take that idea and multiply it calling the Lord not only a shelter, but a fortress. I think about this as a huge castle that is set apart from the rest of the land, maybe on a mountain, moat, and drawbridge. Though the enemy may be charging, we are well protected within our faith, and the greatest part… unlike the place our smart devices leave us, we are never alone!

He Deserves Our Trust

Once again, this can be an absolutely crazy world, hard to find anything that is worthy of our trust. We only need to look at the celebrities we follow. That once-iconic child actor, now a drug abuser on the streets. A once-powerful producer, now in prison charged with unthinkable crimes. An athlete with amazing athletic prowess, now the prime suspect is a brutal murder. There are not many people we can truly put our trust in.

Jesus changes all that, He deserves and demands our trust. Proverbs 3:5 encouraging us to… (5) Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding… What a stark contrast when comparing worldly celebrities to Jesus! We can and should trust the Lord with all our hearts! He is indeed worthy of that. Unlike that athlete, movie star, celebrity, or business tycoon, we can place all of our trust in Him, even when it surpasses our own understanding.

Not Just Protection

Romans 8:28 assures us… (28) And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose… Not only does the Lord offer us protection from this crazy life, He promises to do good for those who love God. Do we deserve it? Absolutely not, but He loves us. I cannot lean on my own understanding here because I do not understand why God loves us. I look at my life, my failures, my unfaithfulness, and wonder how He can still love me. What an amazing promise that He loves us so much that He only wants good for us!

Closing Thoughts:

We may not deserve it, but the Lord offers His protection. He is our refuge, He is our fortress, in this, we can trust! Live in that blessed assurance today, tomorrow, and into eternity!

Psalm 37:4–6 (NKJV)

4 Delight yourself also in the Lord,

And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

5 Commit your way to the Lord,

Trust also in Him,

And He shall bring it to pass.

6 He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light,

And your justice as the noonday.
