Psalm 119:37 (NKJV)
37 Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things,
And revive me in Your way.
This world we live in is full of distraction. Think about any given moment in your home. If your home is anything like mine, you have arguing children, baseball on the television, there are projects that need to be done, pets that need to be fed, the list goes on and on. With everything moving at lightspeed around you, it can be very difficult to focus at all. The point is this… there are a lot of things that can distract our attention from God. It is very important that we do not allow these distractions to take away from our focus on Him.
What Are Worthless Things?
In short, anything that takes our eyes off of Jesus should be considered worthless. Matthew 6:33 reminds us… (33) But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you… Are there places for the stuff above? Absolutely! It is all about the proper perspective. If we can focus on either baseball or God, the priority should be clear. I am not saying you should avoid baseball, just understand that baseball cannot improve your walk with Him.
Love Can Change Everything
1 Corinthians 16:14 gives us one of the most simplistic yet profound commands… (14) Let all that you do be done with love… All that you do, everything, should be done in love. Why should we be so focused on the Lord? Because He is the perfect example of love. He has done so much for us that we should show our love for Him through our obedience to His commandments. Sometimes we must ignore the noise of this world to focus our attention where it belongs.
Revival Of His Way
Wherever you are today, no matter what you are doing, no matter where your heart is at currently, no matter what life is throwing at you… revive Him in your heart. With everything we are going through today, it is difficult to focus on any singular thing, it really is but James 4:8 offers a wonderful reminder… (8) Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded… When we draw near to God and put the focus on the eternal instead of the earthly, our perspective changes dramatically. Allow the Lord to stir up that first love you once had for Him today!
We have a wonderful promise of eternal security, which has to be our focus. Are there other things that are worthy of our attention? Absolutely! Everything we do must be done in accordance to what the Lord expects of us. Everything we do must be done in love. Focus on the Lord and allow Him to revive your heart!
Jeremiah 29:11 (NKJV)
11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.
