Mark 13:32 (NKJV) 32 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
Full disclosure… I am not about to predict when the Lord is going to return. Sorry if you clicked the link thinking so, but I am pretty sure when the Scripture says no one knows, it is probably best translated… no one knows. So with that out of the way, we can focus on the things we can know and change. No One Knows The Day, But He Is Returning! Our hope is dependent upon Christ dying on the cross for our sins, being resurrected in victory over death, and His return to bring His people to our heavenly home. We are promised that this will indeed happen. 1 John 2:28 encourages… (28) And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming… What is our responsibility? We are to abide in Him until His return. How Do We Abide In Him? John 15:1-8 speaks of abiding in Him. He is the vine and we are the branches. In abiding in Him, we should be fully dependent upon Him as a branch cannot survive without the vine. We should also be continually seeking His guidance, His direction, and His wisdom. As we do this, we should start to look like Him. When we get to know the Lord more, we should be looking more like Christ each day. I use the analogy when teaching this to our youth group that if Jesus is a green vine, we should not be purple branches. If we are abiding in His Word, we should be a green branch. The world, and more importantly, the Lord knows when we look like Him and when we do not. Then when we are seeking Him, and desiring to appear like Him, it will lead us to a healthy relationship with Him. What does a healthy relationship look like? Togetherness. We can only come to a closer relationship with Him through prayer and obedience. What If I Told You The Lord Was Coming Back Tomorrow? What would your day look like today if I told you the Lord was coming back within the next 24 hours? Where would the Lord find you upon returning? If you knew ahead of time it probably would look a lot like playing catch up, would it not? You would probably be looking to His Word to see if I could back up my claim with Biblical proof. There would certainly be a lot of prayer. You would probably call your pastor to be baptized no matter how cold the water may be. Life would look a lot different in the next few hours if you thought for sure the Lord’s return was imminent. Why Wait? If you read through Revelation and the rest of the Bible, you will see that there have already been many prophesies fulfilled. The good news for believer and non-believer alike is that there are still many things that must come. Revelation 1:1 offers us the following... (1) The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants—things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John… That word shortly, it means quickly, meaning once these things start to happen, they will do so rapidly. We can either be believers that search the scripture day and night trying to figure out when He is returning or we can be believers that live as though He could return at any moment. The appropriate choice is of course very clear. A very powerful thought… Where will the Lord find you when He suddenly returns? Closing Thoughts: While Covid-19 is probably not a bowl judgment, it can serve as a reminder. Right now there are lots of people running around like it is the end of time. What if we started living our lives as though the Lord was returning today? Life would look quite a bit different, would it not? Live life in full obedience to the Lord’s commands so that He will find you abiding upon His triumphant return! I would encourage you to share this with your friends, it just might start a conversation that saves their soul! 1 Thessalonians 5:23 (NKJV) 23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
