Proverbs 16:3 (NIV)
3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do,
and he will establish your plans.
What does complete surrender look like to you? Complete surrender is a little scary if you ask me. Complete surrender is giving everything over to the Lord, holding nothing back. Complete surrender is a beautiful thing when done in faith. The question is, how do we get there?
Complete Surrender Starts With Trust
When we start a relationship with anyone, there is always a period where trust has to be established. There may be a hesitancy in completely trusting your spouse at the beginning of the marriage. In all honesty, I knew I “married up.” My wife was about two leagues above where I should have been looking. At the beginning of our marriage, I would not say there was a distrust, but there was a hint of doubt whether or not I could trust that she could be happy with me. As the months passed by, I started to trust more and more. Today, I now have a rock-solid trust that she will be commited to me forever.
We have to come to that same place with the Lord. When you think about our relationship with the Lord, it is kind of unbelievable the promises He makes. He died on a cross that we may live forever, the cost of this amazing gift… belief. All we have to do we believe and confess that belief and we are saved. Acts 16:30–31 explains salvation very simply… (30) He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” God sent His Son to die for us, the greatest gift of all time and the price is belief. It took me a long time before I really trusted this idea, I always thought there had to be some strings attached.
He Truly Knows Best
What is the number one reason for holding back from completely surrendering? Self! The idea that we know what is best for ourselves holds us back from a truly trusting relationship with the Lord. Once we realize His plans are better than ours, it becomes easy to give Him complete control over our plans. I praise God for all the times He has forced His will upon my life even when I thought I had it all figured out. Jeremiah 29:11 beautifully explains how much better the Lord’s plan is for us… (11) For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future… Our thoughts, our plans, our desires are so much different than the thoughts, plans, and desires He has for us. We see our life in the present, God being omnipresent sees the much larger picture. His plans are truly worth our trust and commitment.
Completely surrendering to anything is difficult because of our own will. When we truly see the will He has for us, it becomes much easier to surrender this life and all of our works to Him. Have you completely surrendered yet? ‘’
1 Kings 8:61 (NIV)
61 And may your hearts be fully committed to the Lord our God, to live by his decrees and obey his commands, as at this time.”
