Light Or Dark?

1 John 1:5–7 (NKJV)

5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

This is an interesting passage. John wants to make absolutely sure that the reader understands where this truth is coming from. He is saying or declaring that he has heard this directly from the Lord. This is not an assumption or something they themselves have made up, it came directly from Jesus.

Spiritual Light

In a spiritual sense, Jesus is proclaiming to be the only spiritual truth that exists. This, of course, is a bold statement, especially in a world that thinks there are many truths and many different ways to God. Can we have faith that this statement is true? Absolutely. He is the only way to heaven because He lived a sinless life, paid the price on the cross for our sins, and then was resurrected in victory over death. In John 14:6 Jesus says that He is the way, the truth, and the life and then states that nobody can come to the Father but through Him. He is the spiritual truth, He is the only way. Can we trust the claim that in Him, there is no darkness? Many of the disciples faced painful, unthinkable deaths because of their belief in Jesus. If Jesus were anyone other than God, they would not have paid the ultimate price. Think about it, if you and a friend were telling a fabricated story and you see them viciously killed for it, you would fess up really quickly. What we see is the opposite, they all die with great assurance of what is waiting for them on the other side. Is Jesus the only spiritual truth, absolutely!

Be The Light

So, if we believe that Jesus is the only spiritual truth, our goal and aim should be to be more like Him. We should be the light to our friends, our family, and even our enemies. We should illuminate the darkness with the light we have in Jesus. Our goal should be to spread the light through this dark world. The only way to do this is to boldly shine our light everywhere we go. After all, a candle or flashlight that is covered up is never going to illuminate anything.

Closing Thoughts:

We have all sinned, we have all fallen short, so this idea of not walking in darkness does not mean we walk in perfection. Instead, darkness should be the place we continually avoid. Our goal should be to walk in the light. Are we going to slip and fall into darkness once in a while? Yes. Are you living a life in the light or in the dark? We have an amazing promise here, if we walk in the light as He is in the light, He will cleanse us from all darkness. Live in the light!

John 8:12 (NKJV)

12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
