1 Thessalonians 5:4-6 (Berean Study Bible)
4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5 You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober
Do you remember the first day you recognized your sin as sin? Maybe it was a childhood revelation that affected your growing up. Maybe it was something you had never considered to be a sin at all. Or maybe it was something you still find yourself struggling with, even after so many years.
We are born into the world as Children of Darkness. We belong to the night, and are of the world the moment we take our first breath. In a sense, we are ‘asleep.’ Our eyes are closed to the wonders of God, and to His work in our lives.
The Bible is full of contrasting imagery, and important distinctions between literary opposites in both English and the Hebrew language. One of the most important of these is the difference between light and dark, sin and righteousness, and sleep and wakefulness. The book of 1 Thessalonians captures each of these opposites in a single paragraph, and highlights the importance of aligning ourselves to God and His teachings.
The Apostle Paul refers to salvation as transitioning from beings of night to beings of day, or as it is stated in 1 Thessalonians, ‘Children of Light.’ We no longer belong to sin, evil, or the darkness that surrounds either one. Instead, we are the children of God, light itself!
Our God is not a ‘grey’ God. With Him, there are no shadows, dim lights, or dusky corridors. Instead, there is fluorescent, powerful, all-seeking light that hunts down and dissipates all darkness. There is no blindness as a Child of Light. Our eyes are opened wide by the King of Heaven Himself.
As the children of God, we are heirs to a marvelous kingdom and neverending afterlife. We must be wide awake as we await our Father in Heaven, and uphold His commandments until His return. As we know, living as a Child of Light is not easy in the slightest.
How can we continue to live as His children today?
Pray in the Light. Hide nothing from God in your prayers or confessions. He knows your heart already, beloved.
Walk in the Light. Remain upright in all things, no matter how trivial. Let no one call into question your good standing.
Serve in the Light. Reach out to others in love and grace. Abhor pride and false modesty in your servitude to the needy.
Friends, we must continuously throw off our human urge to hide in the night when sin has been committed. We must abstain from the darkness, and remain awake in the eyes of God until His glorious return. Let us strengthen ourselves to live as Children of Light!
How can you learn to live as a Child of Light today, and turn away from the darkness that lies all around you? Are there prayers you can say that will fortify your spirit? What about the spirits of others? God is a God of light, hope, and mercy, and desires for us to leave our dark world of sin to pursue a higher calling. Let us remember that we do not belong to the darkness, and wake in the glory of God’s perfect light!
Act 25:28 (New English Standard Version)
26 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.
1 John 2:8 (Berean Study Bible)
8 Then again, I am also writing you a new commandment, which is true in Him and also in you. For the darkness is fading and the true light is already shining.
