Matthew 18:12–13 (NKJV)
12 “What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to the mountains to seek the one that is straying? 13 And if he should find it, assuredly, I say to you, he rejoices more over that sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray.
I am not sure who said it first or why, but we have a saying here in Maine… “you can’t get there from here.” Of course with GPS and other modern navigation items, like many of the things we say here in Maine, it just does not make any sense. Along those same lines, I want to point something out that bothers me about the perception of Maine, not all of us talk like they portray us in the movies. Not many of us say things like “hard tellin’ not knowin” or “ayuh,” well most of us don’t talk like that bub. I digress.
How Lost Are You?
Life happens fast sometimes, we can be going down the right path, look away for a second, and end up in the wrong direction completely. It can honestly be that fast. That is why we have to continually be evaluating our path, to be looking at our map, to be constantly seeking the Lord’s help. I have a friend who once told me a story about getting lost. She and a friend were driving home from shopping. As they drove home in the dark, they were too busy talking to notice that they were heading west instead of east. They had been driving for a couple of hours before they realized that they did not recognize the towns they were passing. They ended up 3 hours away from their 40-minute ride home. Isn't that exactly where we can find ourselves sometimes? It is always better to realize you missed an exit a couple of miles back then to miss 100 of them consecutively.
No Matter How Lost
Some people have a great sense of direction and quickly realize something is wrong, others can get quite far off the tracks before realizing it. Either way, the Lord wants us to come back to Him. Matthew 18:12-13 offers us the perfect example of the love the Lord has for us. The Lord will seek after us, we are, after all, His children! Through it all, He promises to be by our side. Isaiah 41:10 offers us the perfect example of this… (10) Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.
Turn Back To God
2 Chronicles 15:4 offers us a glimpse of what turning back to God looks like… (4) but when in their trouble they turned to the LORD God of Israel, and sought Him, He was found by them… When in their trouble… isn’t that where we always find ourselves when we stray away? He knows our heart, He knows our desires, He knows when we are lost and hurting. Why not just turn back now, before you have traveled three hours in the wrong direction? How awesome that we can most certainly get there from here!
We can get lost while navigating this crazy life. Take time to look around, really examine where you are at. Have you strayed off course, have you lost your way a bit? He is continually seeking us, even when we are traveling away from Him!
Luke 19:10 (NKJV)
10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
