One Thing I Do Seek

Psalm 27:4 (NIV)

4 One thing I ask from the Lord,

this only do I seek:

that I may dwell in the house of the Lord

all the days of my life,

to gaze on the beauty of the Lord

and to seek him in his temple.

This is a great reminder of what we should seek in life. David, with all his money and fame, only seeks the Lord. From the previous verses in this Psalm, it sounds as though David is surrounded by enemies. Instead of begging for a way out, instead of asking the Lord to take away the current circumstance, David is steadfast in seeking the eternal instead of the earthly.

David knows that the Lord is going to protect him, he is confident in the Lord’s plan. David is not sitting there wondering if God is going to come through this time. David, being a man of faith, knows the Lord’s plan is much greater than his own. David seeks Him in His temple, knowing that the Lord is going to be by his side just as He always has been.

What is it that we seek? Seeking anything other than His will is futile. I remember coaching high school basketball. There was a player that just wanted to play. My plan was to have her play most of the second quarter but she was begging for a few minutes. We can be like that with God, can we not? How many times do we ask God, “if you would only give me that one thing?” We beg God for the things we think we need, all the while, God has so much more in store for us. When we only seek Him, we only receive that which He wants for us. Not a bad deal if you ask me.

I think it is important also that David is seeking the Lord all the days of his life. When life is good, when the enemies are not closing in, it is very easy to look away. We cannot be believers that seek Him only when the pressures of this life are baring down, we need to seek him during all the days of our life.

The beauty of the Lord should be present in all of our lives. It is a beautiful thing the Lord has done for us. We should be very thankful that the Lord picks us up out of the mud and grime of this world and will one day place us in His temple. We should be living each day seeking His face. I hope that is where this devotional finds you this morning!

Closing Thoughts:

David had everything this world can offer. Even with all the money and fame, he still seeks only the Lord. Put aside the earthly and focus upon the eternal. Seek only the Lord!

1 John 4:16 (NKJV)

16 And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.
