Mark 7:21–23 (NKJV)
21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”
If we look around, it is plain to see that we have lost our way, or His way I should say more accurately. We try to peg our moral inefficiencies on this problem or that, try to start movements for every injustice, we are offended by certain causes while championing others. We have lost His way and His truth, which has devastated our lives. I say this not to place blame on any particular person or group, but to finally admit that we are broken. We need to be fixed.
The Root Of The Problem
Look at all the negative attributes listed in verses 21-23, is this not exactly where we are at as a society? Evil thoughts have overtaken our minds, adultery and fornication have become normalized, murder and theft are constantly celebrated on television shows, look around and it does not take long to find covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, blasphemy, pride and foolishness. We have trusted our hearts even while knowing it is full of all these things. Romans 1:21 gives us the perfect example where the root of the problem lies… (21) because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened… How sad that we know God, but refuse to give Him glory, we see the amazing things He does for us, yet we fail to live lives demonstrating a thankfulness. We have futile thoughts and our foolish hearts are surrounded in darkness.
Acts 2:38 (38) Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit… Oh, how different the world would look if we were to truly repent, be baptized in newness, and follow God! I think we spend so much time seeking answers for our societal problems we miss the answer that is sitting on the shelf collecting dust.
James 1:22 urges us to… (22) But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves… What would our world look like if we followed His commandments? We cannot be children of God that listen on Sunday’s and forget the message by Monday, that is not going to change the world we live in. We must “do” the will of God, we must embrace His message, we must be the light! Only through following His commandments can we correct this dreadful, fleshly heart that we trust far too often!
There is a lot of evil and filthiness in the world today, the only answer is to fully commit to, and be completely sold out for Christ!
Romans 6:23 (NKJV)
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
