James 3:5 (NKJV)
5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!
The tongue is a powerful thing, it lifts people up or brings them crashing to the ground. Something as little as the tongue can change a life, change history, and can change the world. A tongue can also sway people’s thoughts one way or the other. A tongue, while small in stature is a very powerful thing, something that should be guarded constantly.
Deceived By Its Power
We often hear the children’s rhyme “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me,” you know who is repeating that rhyme? Hurting people! Hurting people that are honestly trying to make the offender believe they are not hurt by the things being said.
The greatest enemy is the one that does not know their own strength. That enemy is very dangerous. So too is the tongue. Think about the stigma associated with the tongue. Like the silly little rhyme above, the stigma we stick to words is… well, they are only words. Words, however, can be sharper than any two-edged sword. They can literally cut to the soul.
Deliverer Of Hope
A quick Google search of the words “powerful quotes” will produce such quotes as… “I start early and I stay late, day after day, year after year, it took me 17 years and 114 days to become an overnight success.” – Lionel Messi and “A ship is safe in harbor, but that’s not what ships are for.”– William G.T. Shedd… There are of course thousands more. The point is this, the spoken word is cherished. We record positive things people say. What if you used your tongue to deliver true hope? Every single time we open our mouth we should ask if the words coming out are going to edify God or not. Will the words you say impact positively or lead a person to stumble? We are here to deliver hope to the hopeless.
The tongue is such a small part of our body but can make the largest impact on the world. With our tongue, we can curse, cause discontent, and inflict pain. Choose instead to spread love, joy, and hope!
1 Peter 3:10 (NIV)
10 For, “Whoever would love life
and see good days
must keep their tongue from evil
and their lips from deceitful speech.
