1 John 5:14 (NKJV)
14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
When I first came to the Lord, prayer was something that intimidated me a little. I know that may sound a little silly, but it was absolutely true. I often wondered if I was even doing it correctly. I became even more convinced as my prayers were seemingly never met. I honestly had little clue how this prayer thing worked. Maybe I am the only one that had this experience, if so, just move to the bottom of this page and read the other verse of the day and be blessed. However, if you have any questions about prayer, hopefully, this devotional will get you moving in the right direction.
How Do I Pray?
As it turns out, praying is fairly straightforward. We are simply talking to God. Praying is a lot like conversation, we are just directing that conversation to the Lord. Nothing to worry about at all. There is no right way or wrong way to speak to our God. We do, however, want to make sure of two things. First, we want to always thank God for the blessings He has bestowed upon us. Secondly, we need to make our request known.
As we approach the Lord in prayer, we should be doing so in humility and thankfulness. After all, if the Lord does not provide us with another blessing above and beyond our salvation, He has already blessed with more than we will ever deserve.
Matthew 6:7 reminds us not to babel on and on as we pray. Can prayer last a long time? Absolutely! Sometimes we will have a lot to bring to the Lord, but we should be getting to the point in everything we are asking of Him. How many conversations have you been in where you just wish they would get to the point? We can certainly make our wishes known without dragging the process out.
Pretty simple, right?
According To His Will
Now there is a stumbling block for some of us. I know when I first came to the Lord, I treated the Lord more like a genie than my Lord and Savior. A typical conversation would go king of like this… “Thank you Lord for all you are doing, I would like a new car because this one isn’t quite what I wanted after all, I would also like a little more money in my paycheck each week, oh and Lord, my wife has been a little rude this week, can you fix that?” Yup, that was my prayer life in a nutshell.
Instead, we should be asking according to His will… but what does that mean? The closer and closer we become with the Lord, the more and more our thoughts and desires should align with His. The more we study His Word, the more we will understand the things He wants to see in our lives. When our prayer aligns with His will, our prayers will become less self-centered and more God-centered.
If you do not know God’s will, just study His Word and it will become very clear!
Praying does not have to be difficult. We should be in continual conversation with the Lord... simple conversation. Prayer is nothing to be worried about at all, especially when you are praying according to His will anyway!
Psalm 17:6 (NKJV)
6 I have called upon You, for You will hear me, O God;
Incline Your ear to me, and hear my speech.
