Signs of the Times

Mark 13:4

Tell us, when shall these things be and what shall be the signs when all these things shall be fulfilled.

Signs, signs, everywhere are signs, oftentimes, when trouble strikes many Christians believe it is a sign of the end times; the truth is that from the time Jesus ascended into heaven after Pentecost, we have been living one day closer to the return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I can say with certainty that we are facing the end of time as we once knew it to be; is there more to come before His return, will the birth pangs become more intense and closer together making life more and more unbearable?

We are given many warning signs in the bible of what takes place preceding the return of Jesus. We know that there will be "wars and rumors of war, earthquakes in various places, and famines and troubles as the beginnings of sorrows." Mark 13:7-8 These things are evident as they are reported daily for us to read and see throughout a variety of media outlets.

The signs of end times that Jesus describes in His Word include division among people unlike any other time; He tells us that "brother shall betray brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death." When I first read these scriptures many years ago, I thought it was highly unlikely that we would see in our time this type of hatred for one another, and yet here we are. There are many stories of families being torn apart because of differing views, causing deep pain and suffering beyond comprehension. Jesus warns us, "if the world hates you, know that it hated me first." John 15:18

Jesus tells us that in the end, many will come in His name, "Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceives you: For many shall come in my name saying, I am Christ and shall deceive many." Mark 13:5-6

Are we able to discern between the false christs and the true Son of Man? If you study the characteristics of the true and living Christ, you will be able to easily know if one coming in His name is a counterfeit or the real deal. John 10:27 states that, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me."

When you develop a relationship with Jesus, you learn to know and trust Him; He speaks to us through the Holy Spirit who lives within us; that gift comes from accepting Christ as our Savior and believing He died for our sins and has been resurrected and is seated next to God the Father awaiting His return at the appointed time, that which no man knows, but has been given signs. "But take heed; behold, I have told you everything in advance." Mark 13:23

Closing Thoughts

If we're lingering in our walk with the Lord, it may be time to step up our effort to prepare for what lies ahead. Dust off your bible and learn that Jesus is "the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Him." John 14:6

Mark 13:21-22

And then if anyone says to you, 'Behold, here is the Christ'; or, 'Behold, He is there; do not believe him; for false Christs and false prophets will arise, and will show signs and wonders, in order to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.
