Still Waters

Psalm 23:2-3 NIV

2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.

Sometimes this life can get overwhelming. You may be juggling never-ending to-do lists, working on projects, making sure your kids are learning what they need, grocery shopping, running errands, worrying about money, or worrying about your line of work. No matter where you are in life, no matter what is overwhelming you, there is an answer.

The above scripture, Psalm 23, can be applied to many situations. I like to conjure up the peaceful image of a person lying in green grass beside a riverbank. This is what God wants for us—to worry less and to take care of us. God has given us all we need, including peace.

In Matthew 11:28, Jesus tells all that are weary and heavy burdened to come to Him and He will give us rest. How nice is it that we have a God who cares about us in this way? He doesn’t want us to be overwhelmed or too busy with life. The Bible says nothing about faith being overwhelming. In fact, it tells us in Matthew 11:30 that His burden is light and yoke is easy.

When you are feeling overwhelmed:

  • Dive into Scripture. Try picking out a few verses that really speak to you and write them on notecards. Place them somewhere that will be easily accessible or where you can view them every day.

  • Call on Him. Prayer can get pushed to the backburner pretty easily during times of chaos and when there’s so much on our plates, but it is essential. Luckily, it doesn’t matter where you are or if you are physically on your knees praying. You can speak to God at any moment. Even when you don’t have the words, just calling out the name Jesus has power. He is always with you.

  • Chat with a friend. Maybe you have someone you can go to that has the same faith and can help put things into perspective – maybe a pastor, mentor, friend. If not, maybe writing your worries down on paper can help you give them to God.

  • Trust in God. He is the ultimate comforter.

Closing Thoughts:

When life gets overwhelming, we need to press into Him. The more we lean into God, the more he can set things into perspective for us, and the more He can provide the strength we need to keep going when things are tough. Scripture says we can do all things with through Christ who strengthens us.

Isaiah 40:31 NIV

31 But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.
