1 Corinthians 10:13 (NKJV)
13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
When the weight of temptation bears down upon you, when it feels like there is no other place to turn, when you feel like given in, we are promised there is a way of escape. How awesome is it that God has placed such safeguards in our life? We must understand there will be temptations in our lives, that is a given, but are we constantly seeking the way to escape it?
Comfort In Numbers
We can often unjustly label our temptation as a uniqueness that we alone must bear, but scripture would prove this idea wrong. No temptation has overtaken you except such is common to man… our temptation may be slightly different, but it is far from unique. If you struggle with some hidden temptation, take heart, other brothers and sisters are most likely struggling with the very same thing.
Where Does My Strength Come From?
Our strength comes from the Lord, we are reminded in 2 Timothy 1:7… (7) For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind… If God has not given us a spirit of fear, and has given us power, love, and a sound mind, we should be able to avoid temptation. If the Lord is not going to allow us to be tempted beyond our ability to avoid it, what is pushing us towards any given temptation?
Not Seeking Escape
If we are not being tempted beyond our ability and we are given the strength, and we fall into temptation, it is our flesh not seeking escape. We allow ourselves to believe there is no escaping a certain temptation, that there is no way to avoid it. How many times have you put yourself upon the road to temptation? Do you struggle with alcohol addiction but still attend parties and social events that are all but certain to have alcohol? Do you struggle with gambling but still allow yourself to attend the poker night with the guys? If we are doing this, we are not seeking the way of escape. Use God’s way of escape to avoid these situations altogether.
Unfortunately, we are promised that we will face temptation. The question is whether or not we will seek God’s escape from the temptations thrown our way, or fall entirely into that temptation? God has given us a sound mind, He has given us the power to avoid temptation, we must continually use our mind and power to avoid all temptation.
James 1:12 (NKJV)
12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.
