The One Thing We Should Seek

Psalm 27:4 (NIV)

4 One thing I ask from the Lord,

this only do I seek:

that I may dwell in the house of the Lord

all the days of my life,

to gaze on the beauty of the Lord

and to seek him in his temple.

Psalm 27:4 is a verse we should keep on our heart 24/7. Okay, I had to use that corny phrase because of who I am. The phrase is admittedly cheesy, but it is something we should continually consider. King David had everything you could ever hope for, money, fame, power, the list goes on and on. What was the one thing King David wanted above all else? To dwell in the house of the Lord. Is that what hope for? Is that the only thing we seek? It certainly should be!

Investing In The Right Things

Matthew 6:19–21 offers powerful insight… (19) “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; (20) but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. (21) For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also… David certainly had the things that moth and rust destroy and thieves are likely to steal, but that was not his focus. His focus was on the future, his goals were heavenly not earthly. We get wrapped up in having the newest phone, the biggest house, the fastest cars, when we should be seeking only one thing… dwelling with the Lord!

Investing In Others

I am blessed that the Lord has used me at all in ministry. I am not worthy of even being considered for such things. With that being said, there is absolutely nothing more satisfying than bringing others to a saving knowledge of the Lord. Mark 16:15 gives a very clear commandment… (15) And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature… If we are to preach the gospel to everyone, we must be willing to invest time and resources into them. The old saying goes “nobody cares about how much you know until they know how much you care.” This is absolutely true when dealing with evangelism. You can have the greatest tracts and the most captivating speeches, none of it matters until you prove you care. If you want others to dwell in the house of the Lord, you must be willing to put in the time.

Seek Him First

Our goal should be dwelling in the kingdom forever. If that is the goal, if that is our true desire, we must seek Him first. Matthew 6:33 offers the following reminder… (33) But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you… If we truly seek Him first, if we put His commandments before our own will, if we turn our whole life over to Him… we will eventually dwell in the house of the Lord forever! What an amazing promise.

Closing Thoughts:

There is only one thing we should seek, and that is eternity with Him. We must seek Him first in all we do. We should also spread the hope we have with the lost world. If we are seeking Him first, if we are spreading His hope, and if we are abiding in His commandments, we will find ourselves with our eternal reward at the end of this life.

Matthew 25:23 (NKJV)

23 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’
