Hebrews 4:12 NIV
12 For the word of God is alive and exerts power and is sharper than any two-edged sword and pierces even to the dividing of the soul and spirit, and of the joints and their marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
The Bible is filled page after page with the word of God. I’m convinced these words have even more power than we often think about while reading them. Here is what the Bible says about the word of God:
We need it. Matthew 4:4 tells us we need it to live just like we need bread. Our soul needs it. We hunger for it.
It is for our training. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 explains that scripture is breathed out by God for our teaching. It gives us wisdom and trains us to do His works.
It is our defense. Ephesian 6:17 says, “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” The enemy is no match for God’s Holy Bible. If someone is in need, speak scripture over them.
It is truth. John 17:17 says, “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.” This means we can trust what it says.
It guides us. Psalm 119:105 tells us His word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.
It is eternal. Isaiah 40:8 says that even though the grass and flowers wither, His word will endure forever.
It is alive. Hebrews 4:12 is the perfect scripture to describe the power of God’s word. It is “alive and active”. It can even judge the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Everything we need can be found in the words given to us by God. When we need defense against the enemy, when we need teaching, when we’re feeling beaten down by the weight of this world, we can turn to the word of God. It even gives us examples of what we should do, as well as how and when to praise him. The word has power to cut through to our soul like a two-edged sword and give us exactly what we need.
How grateful are we that we have an entire book of God’s word that we can trust and lean on? It is a gift to celebrate. The Bible is full of life! Let’s try digging into the word with a whole new outlook this morning.
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
