Micah 6:8 (NKJV) 8 He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?
As believers, we throw out terms that just sound good sometimes. Walk with God, it is so poetic, it flows off the tongue very well. I am not saying that the term “walking with God” is a bad thing, quite to opposite actually, I am just saying we should really examine what it really means and the benefits of doing so. On a completely different note, how awesome is it that we can walk with God? He Has Shown You If you were playing a sport for the first time, chances are you would look into what the rules and expectations are. After all, you would not want to score in the wrong basket, or cost your team a victory because of an unknown rule. It is very much the same with our walk with God. He has certain rules and expectations He has for our walk. John 14:15 (15) reminds us… “If you love Me, keep My commandments… If we are trying to walk with God, chances are we love Him, If we love Him, we should keep His commandments. Where do we find these commandments? Well, He was good enough to give us the Bible with all His rules and expectations. I hate to hammer the same point over and over but it is important to be in regular Bible study. Be a dedicated student and your walk with God should go smoother. Do Justly In everything, we do we should be trying to reflect the values of our God. Doing justly is the same as treating people with fairness. Ephesians 4:32 gives the perfect example of how we ought to treat people… (32) And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you… Is that how we approach others, with kindness, tenderheartedness, and forgiveness? If God supplied an abundance of these things, we must pour them out ourselves. Love Mercy Everyone knows that we are to show mercy, but here we are being asked to take that a step further. Luke 6:36 reminds us (36) Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful… God shows us an abundance of mercy, Lamentations 3:22–23 promises… (22) Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. (23) They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness… So what does it mean to love mercy? It means to literally love to hand out mercy. We should be freely handing out the mercy that we desire from the Lord. Walk Humbly We should be walking through this life as though the Lord is physically walking beside us. What if we all made that change? How awesome would this world be? Think about it, the language I used in high school with my friends around was a lot different than the language I used when my parents were around… sorry, Mom! There is just something about being in the presence of our earthly parents that makes us behave better. If our heavenly Father is walking beside us, what would He think of perverse language, hateful words, abuse of substances, adultery, greed, and any other sinful deed? If your heavenly Father was standing next to you would you lie to your friends? If you could physically see God standing next to you, would you utter blasphemous words? Chances are, believer or not, if God was standing next to you, you would walk humbly! Let us walk as though He is standing right next to us. Closing Thoughts: How much different would our lives look if God our Father was standing right next to us? Live each moment as though our God is by your side. We are promised in Joshua 1:9… (9) Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” Romans 13:13 (NKJV) 13 Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy.
