James 4:17 (NKJV)
17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.
At the heart of the Christian walk is a desire to do what pleases God. We must be followers that are continually seeking God’s will instead of our own. Even when our flesh is begging us to do otherwise, our focus must be on the will of God and abiding in it. How do we know the will of God? That is a very important question to answer.
Lean Not On Your Own Understanding
Proverbs 3:5–6 offers the following… (5) Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; (6) In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths… Our abiding in His will starts with trust. If we trust the Lord with our whole heart, it will lead to obedience. Once we truly trust God with our lives, we will then seek His will instead of our own.
Proverbs 11:14 reminds us… (14) Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety… We must seek godly counsel to understand the will of God. Sometimes this means studying scripture, sometimes it means talking with your pastor, other times it may mean spending time alone with the Lord in prayer.
Know Good And Do It
We must live a life of both humility and dependence upon God. When we do both, we will naturally understand what is good and do it. The Lord is so good to us, and He only wants the best for us. Mark 7:20–23 reminds us what our flesh would have us to do… (20) And He said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”
What is going to define you as a believer? Obedience and doing good, or disobedience leading to sin? We know what is good, He explains that throughout His Word, it is time to decide if we are going to abide in it or not.
Each of us knows good from bad, right from wrong… it is up to us to decide if we are going to live completely sold out for Christ or not. We can do so with complete faith that His ways are much better than ours!
Jeremiah 29:11 (NKJV)
11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.
