1 Corinthians 2:9 (NKJV)
9 But as it is written:
“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
This life is tough, and if you look ahead and study Revelation, it is bound to get worse. Not a great way to start an uplifting devotional but that is the truth. We live in a world that is full of sin, full of hurt, and full of disappointment. As Christians, we must look forward to the time that we escape the sin, escape the hurt, and escape the disappointment. Our hope was never intended to lie here.
In This Life
I love that Jesus speaks the truth no matter how bad it may hurt or disappoint. I love it because we do not have to wonder whether or not He is just trying to make us feel better about our current situation. Jesus does not sugarcoat anything and because of that, we can take His word as absolute truth.
In John 16:33 we see Jesus lovingly warn us of the things to come… (33) These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world… I think we can sometimes get wrapped up in the idea that as soon as we are Christian, we are promised a perfect life. Well, that is simply not the case. Jesus tells us point blank that we are going to face tribulation. We are going to go tough times, we are going to face sin head-on, this life is going to be disappointing, we are going to experience pain. But then the promise… we are to be of good cheer because He has overcome the world.
Overcoming The World
Because He overcame the world, we too will overcome the world. Not because of something great we have done, but through His grace and mercy. Streets of gold, playing harps on clouds, well I do not know about that, but we are promised something very awesome in Revelation 21:4… (4) And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away… Think about the stuff that hurts the most in this life, tears, death, sorrow, crying, it is all gone! There is a beautiful future ahead, one that we cannot fully understand. Is there going to be streets of gold and all that stuff? maybe. I am more concerned with the things the Lord has promised to take away. What a glorious place to be!
The future for us as Christians in very bright, we have great hope. This hope should drive us to spread God’s word so that others would get to experience this wonderful promise. Even more than that though, the little bit we know about heaven should provide the encouragement to power through this life.
Luke 23:43 (NKJV)
43 And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
