Colossians 3:23–24 (NKJV)
23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.
I am lucky, I have a job that I enjoy, with people that I love, serving my great God all the while. I am a content manager for a growing marketing company. The work can be stressful at times, or all the time I suppose, but I go to work every single day and give the position everything I have until the job is complete. Why? because of these verses right here. If anything is worth doing, we should be doing it to the best of our abilities.
Why should we be doing whatever we do heartily? because it pleases the Lord. Pretty straight forward there. But why does it please the Lord? Working hard for your employer shows dedication, a very worthy attribute. When we show dedication to our job, it is a direct reflection of the dedication we have for our Lord as well. Being diligent while at work is how we show our servitude towards our customers and co-workers. If we love our neighbor as ourselves we should be continually looking to help others, what better place than the workplace? The quality of our work should always show God’s glory!
This should also be the heart we have while working in ministry as well. Ministry accomplished behind the pulpit or between friends, or anything in between should be done heartily. Is that where you are right now? Do you use every opportunity to spread God’s promises? If you are giving everything you have to spreading the Gospel, that effort will be rewarded. I have seen Christians witness with such tenacity that I was ready to accept Christ all over again, and I have seen those that take the Eeyore type approach, as expected, the outcomes could not be further apart.
So far, we have spoken of work and witnessing, but the same attitude can be applied throughout our lives. Are you a student? If you are trying to please the Lord in everything you have, it should be seen through the effort you give to the class. Are you an athlete? If you are competing heartily, there should be no taking plays off, up 30 or down 30, compete to the best of your abilities. Maybe you are a teacher, maybe you are a parent, maybe you are a child, whatever you are, whatever you are doing, do it to the best of your abilities that you may be a blessing to the Lord.
People see the effort we give, whether that be at work, witnessing, or at play, let the world see Christ through you in everything you do.
Philippians 4:13 (NKJV)
13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
